Woodfords clinic will be open one day a week

Susan Wood, Tahoe Daily Tribune

Alpine County is looking for a new public health officer and a doctor for its scaled-down community clinic but the two positions may not be held by the same person, a county spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Barton Memorial Hospital will terminate its contract with the county for limited services July 11, but the county intends to continue to run the Woodfords clinic. The clinic, which has been serving about 50 patients, will operate one day a week instead of two, said Katherine Kerr, the county’s health and human services director.

The topic will be discussed at the Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday.

“My sense from the board is (it) felt committed to having a clinic,” Kerr said.

Dr. Garrett Schwartz will end his contract at the clinic May 31 because he wants to spend more time with his practice and baby girl. Schwartz, who serves as the clinic doctor and public health officer, offered to work through June to allow time to find a replacement, Kerr said.

Nurse practitioner Debbie Cheevers will stay on until July 11.

In a mutual decision, the county and South Lake Tahoe-based health care organization have determined the clinic isn’t profitable.

Three years ago, Dr. Rick Botto resigned as public health officer. The county held public forums on how it can best serve the needs of its residents. It came up with a part-time clinic but its hours have been whittled down.
