Yacht Club awards scholarships

The South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club awarded $1,000 scholarships to two high school students during a recent general membership dinner meeting. The successful recipients are Saurabh Desai, a 2004 graduate of South Tahoe High School and Oscar Suarez, a 2004 graduate of George Whittell High School.

The applicants were judged on character, grade-point average, financial need, field of study and extra-curricular activities.

Desai is the son of Mahendra and Panna Desai. He has elected to major in electrical engineering and will attend California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, Calif. He is an exceptional student, who made the National Honor Society and Who’s Who Among American High Schools throughout his high school years. He also contributed to the community by volunteering at Barton Memorial Hospital and served as a peer counselor while participating in the SMILE program at school.

Suarez is the son of Alfonso and Emilia Suarez. He has decided to attend Lasen College in California and will major in business economics. In addition to being an exceptional student, who was in the National Honor Society throughout high school, he was an avid participant of varsity cross country and track. He also tutored at Zephyr Cove Elementary School. He has contributed to the community by helping raise money for the Boys & Girls Club and being active at Our Lady of Tahoe Catholic Church.
