Yacht Club awards scholarships

The South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club has awarded two scholarships of $1,000 each to graduating seniors Julie Shuk Chong Tam of South Tahoe High School and Ben Brockman-Hawe of George Whittell High School. The applicants were judged on character, grade point average, financial need, leadership qualities, field of study, extracurricular activities and employment activities.

Julie Shuk Chong Tam is the daughter of Chung Sang Tam and Oi Ming Tam of South Lake Tahoe. She has been accepted at the University of California at Berkeley and plans to major in statistics. In addition to her high school classes she has been taking classes at Lake Tahoe Community College since 1998. She was involved in basketball and track and field and won NIAA Academic Team honors in both sports. She also was active in many school and service organizations and worked throughout her high school career in her family’s business and at other jobs in the service industry.

Ben Brockman-Hawe is the son of Linda Brockman of Zephyr Cove. He will attend the University of Judiasm in Los Angeles where he will major in bio-ethics with an interest in pre-med. He has been enrolled in college courses during his senior year at high school. His interests include theater and dance and he plays several musical instruments. He ws a member of the National Honor Society and the French Club. He advanced to the regionals in the annual Rotarian speech contests, where he took second place. He had the opportunity to intern with a local physician during his senior year.
