Yacht club lets kids set sail for college
The South Lake Tahoe Yacht Club awarded $1,000 scholarships to two local high-school students during a recent general membership dinner meeting. The successful recipients are Steven Moore of South Tahoe High and Stephanie Evans of George Whittell High.
The applicants were judged on character, grade point average, financial need, leadership qualities, field of study, extra-curricular activities and employment activities.
Moore is the son of Donna Moore of South Lake Tahoe. He has elected to major in engineering and has been accepted to the University of California, San Diego. In addition to being an exceptional student, attaining a 4.0 and greater for his four years of high school, he also has taken numerous advanced placement courses and received well above average grades. He received high honors in the Golden State Honors Exams in biology, geometry and chemistry. He was a Boy’s State Delegate and an AP Scholar. He was a member of the cross country running team during his high school career and was named captain during his senior year . He was a member of the Academic League and became an AVID tutor during his senior year.
Evans is the daughter of Robert and Jenifer Evans of Zephyr Cove. She has decided to major in criminal justice and will attend California State University, Chico. She is an exceptional student who was a member of the National Honor Society during her junior and senior years. She has been an elementary school tutor and assisted with a diabetes fund-raiser and the awareness fair. She has participated in volleyball, softball and basketball during her high school years. As a senior, she was co-captain of the First Team All-League, All-Tournament volleyball team.
