Letter — Take action for peace

Tahoe Daily Tribune

Please join me in working for peace right here in Tahoe.

I urge all of you who oppose going to war with Iraq to speak up and TAKE ACTION!

The incredible outpouring of public opinion can and is making a difference. Please start by phoning the White House Comment Hotline (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. E.S.T.). I do it as part of my morning ritual. The number is (202) 456-1111. Keep redialing if it is busy. Eventually you will get a very pleasant operator who will take your comments.

Another thing you can do is take part in the “Rice for Peace Campaign,” where sealed plastic sandwich bags of rice are mailed to President Bush. This campaign started at the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center in Boulder, Colo., and is spreading all over the country. Just do this: Put 1/2 cup of rice into a baggie, seal it, and wrap a note around it that says, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them (Romans 12:20). Please send this rice to the people of Iraq. Do not attack them.” Put it in an envelope (regular or padded) addressed to President George W. Bush; 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW; Washington, D.C. 20500. The postage is $1.06 (three 37-cent stamps). Print Rice For Peace Campaign” on the outside of the envelope.

I am circulating a petition for a city resolution opposing war. I have contacted Mayor Judy Brown and council members to inform them about the Cities for Peace movement, and will present the petition to them at the City Council meeting at 9 a.m. Feb. 25 at the council chambers on Tata Lane. Please attend this meeting and speak up in support of the resolution. So far 58 city governments have passed resolutions, which have been sent to the president and other elected officials. Please write letters to the editor and the City Council in support of a city resolution opposing military action against Iraq. Find more information at the Web site citiesforpeace.org
