Monster snow welcome, but causing delays at Lake Tahoe resorts
March 2, 2018
With about 3 feet of snow Thursday into Friday, ski resorts are doing a lot of shoveling trying to get their lifts ready to get people up the mountain.
Heavenly and Kirkwood mountain resorts will experience lengthy delays before hauling people up the lifts, according to Heavenly and Kirkwood communications manager Kevin Cooper Friday morning.
Getting to Kirkwood as of now is impossible with California Route 88 closed in both directions with no estimate for reopening. Kirkwood reported the most snow of any resort in the basin with 36 inches. The snow continues to fall and will do so throughout the day. Road crews are performing avalanche control on Carson Pass.
Once at Kirkwood, the backside will not open today and winds are borderline as of 8:15 a.m. to use safely, Cooper said. He said chairs 2, 3, 4 are closed for the day with teams focusing on opening 5, 7 and 9. Chair 10 is buried he said.
Heavenly is reporting 30 inches of snow and winds up to 80 mph last night. Cooper is excited for the new terrain that will eventually be opened, but skiers and riders will have to wait while the resort digs out lifts.
The resort will open today on a lift-to-lift basis and will open whatever they can whenever they can, Cooper said.

What he does know is that Mott Canyon will not open today but the Nevada side is expected to open to the top of Dipper. Sky also is expected to be open but, again, there is no estimated time.
"This is what we needed," Cooper said of winter finally flexing its muscles.
Sierra-at-Tahoe also tweeted that it received 2 feet of snow in the last 24 hours but it is trying to open on time, at 9 a.m. Diamond Peak on the North Shore received about a foot.
