Achievements many for Alex Romagnolo

The achievements continue to pile up for Alex Romagnolo and the University of San Diego men’s soccer team.

San Diego recently completed West Coast Conference play unbeaten to finish first. The Toreros’ WCC title and 15-1-2 record translated into a fourth seed for the upcoming NCAA Division I tournament.

“It’s been an incredible year. Just because we’re so young no one expected this,” Romagnolo said. “Having home-field advantage to the Final Four is a great opportunity for us.”

The Toreros serve as hosts for their first-round matchup with UCLA (12-6) Saturday at 5 p.m. The Bruins defeated San Diego 4-1 last year in the opening round of the tournament.

“It’s going to be a great game. Everybody is pumped,” Romagnolo said. “Last year it seemed our team was intimidated. This year everybody can’t wait to play them.”

San Diego can play as many as three home games as long as it keeps winning.

Romagnolo, a former standout player for the South Tahoe High Vikings, has been a fixture in the Toreros’ starting lineup. The redshirt freshman midfielder has started 13 games and scored three goals.

If the Toreros defeat UCLA, they’ll play either Ohio State or Creighton on Nov. 25 or 26 in San Diego.
