Alexander-Moulton sweep playoff matches

Steve Yingling

South Tahoe High doubles team Parker Alexander and Garrett Moulton strengthened their regional tournament seeding with three victories in the Vikings’ 15.5-7 boys tennis playoff defeat to Reed on Friday in Sparks.

The duo accounted for 4 1/2 of the Vikings’ seven points. They raised their season record to 21-2 and all but sewed up one of the top seeds for the individual regional championships, which begin Thursday at Plumas Tennis Center in Reno.

“They should be first or second,” said STHS coach Pat Fagen.

Fagen’s team threatened to start its fourth straight postseason appearance with an upset on Friday. The Vikings were ahead after the first rotation of play, but Reed (8-1) dominated the final two rounds.

“The kids played tough,” Fagen said. “Reed just had a lot more depth than we did and it started to show up in the second and third rounds.”

STHS’s other wins came off the rackets of doubles team Mikey Ledesma and Jason Schmedes and singles player Chris Fillipko.

The Vikings finished with a 7-3 record, and should only benefit next fall from playing underclassmen this season.

“I was proud of the kids for the way they came through this year,” Fagen said. “We lost seven seniors last year and we were in a rebuilding year, but the kids played great and were actually one win from matching last year’s record.”

Regionals start at 2 p.m. Thursday and continue Friday at 8 a.m. and Saturday at 9 a.m.
