Alpine County waters to be stocked with ton of rainbow trout

More than 2,000 pounds of rainbow trout are scheduled to be planted in Alpine County waters later this month and into July, courtesy of the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce.

On June 22, the East and West Forks of the Carson River will receive 1,000 pounds, while an equal amount will go into Caples Lake on June 29. A final half ton plant is planned for Lake Alpine near Bear Valley on July 19.

The fish plants are part of an ongoing program sponsored by the chamber of commerce each year to supply fishing enthusiasts with rainbow trout in Alpine Country’s lakes and streams.

Provided by American Trout & Salmon in Susanville, the fish range from a catchable size of 1-to-2 pounds, up to trophy fish ranging from 4-to-6 pounds. The Alpine County Fish & Game Commission also regularly plants Alpine County’s waters with rainbow and brown trout, as does the California Dept. of Fish & Game.

With more than 60 lakes and streams, Alpine County also offers three special zero limit waters for catch-and-release anglers. With brown, brook and rainbow trout, the East Fork of the Carson River below Hangman Bridge is quickly developing into an excellent fishery, while the private Pleasant Valley Flyfishing Preserve provides an exclusive permit only angling experience. Heenan Lake, on State Route 89 south of Markleeville is also very popular, providing a limited season on weekends in the fall for Lahontan cutthroat trout.
