Argonaut stifles STHS girls
Alexis Holmes led the South Tahoe girls’ basketball team in scoring for the second straight game, but her 17 points weren’t enough in a 56-43 nonleague loss to Argonaut on Saturday in Jackson. Holmes, a sophomore, scored 12 points in the Vikings’ 36-27 Sierra League win over Damonte Ranch last Thursday in Reno.
But against Argonaut, South Tahoe needed more than one player to crack the opposition’s zone defense. Karli Vath finished with nine points in the double-digit loss.
“It was one of those weird games where I felt like we played great the whole game, but we ended up losing the game,” said STHS coach Chris Holmes. “We had a difficult time with their zone, and we just hit a lull where we couldn’t make anything. But we played a good, hard game. We just didn’t come out on top.”
South Tahoe (4-4 overall, 1-0 league) was without top rebounder and inside presence Alexis Nunes-Fenley, who is expected back this week. The Vikings travel to Placerville later this week to play in the El Dorado Invitational. South Tahoe opens against Florin on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
“This is another opportunity for us to play games with a shot clock, which they use in California (league play),” Holmes said. “I was really pleased with how Tess Braun controlled tempo this weekend. She did a real good job of that, and it helped us a lot on offense.”
In other girls’ basketball action, Whittell played Pyramid Lake on Friday in a nonleague game. The result of the game was unavailable at press time.
