Athanas wins $49,236 at WSOP

James Athanas of Orange, Calif., emerged from a 94-player field in a $1,500 buy-in, No-Limit Hold’Em tournament at the World Series of Poker Lake Tahoe Circuit Event on Thursday at Harveys Resort and Casino.

Athanas won $49,236 for his first-place finish. William Hurwitz of Owing Mills, Md., took second and $27,354 and Dean Hamrick of Plymouth, Mich., took third and collected $15,045.

Reno’s Tony Le placed fourth ($10,492) and Carson City’s Robert Glenn finished sixth ($8,206) to highlight the Northern Nevada players in the tournament.

The Stateline-casino has been the WSOP’s tournament headquarters since the first of nine tournaments started on June 7. The $10,000 buy-in, No-Limit Hold’Em main event began on Friday and the final table is scheduled for today at 4 p.m. at Harveys.

The final table will be taped by ESPN and will air later this year.
