AYSO playoffs begin with flurry of goals

South Tahoe AYSO soccer playoffs are under way as many teams took their first step toward what they hope ends with a division championship.

In boys Under 10 Division play on Saturday, the Blue Lightning defeated the Turquoise Turbulence 4-0 behind Gavin Chandler’s three goals and strong play between the pipes by Jon Weldy.

In addition, Goldfinger overcame the Raptors 4-1. The Raptors led 1-0 at halftime, even though Goldfinger had many more scoring opportunities. Goldfinger, however, took advantage of its chance in the the second half as Notanee Vasquez scored twice and Ricky Braun and Kyle Wallace added goals.



In other U10 games, the Green Dragons struck often against the Silver Snakes in a 5-1 victory; the Orange Tigers put a deep freeze on the Snow Leopards 6-0 as five different players scored; the Pythons squeezed a victory out of the Light Blue Lightening 6-1 and Jorge Lopez scored three times as Tim Mattison’s team blanked the Tornadoes 4-0.

In U10 girls action, the Blue Thunder repeatedly had reasons clap in a 5-0 win against the Peach Pounders; the Purple Stars shined brighter than the Black Soccer Attack as Brie Orlich scored the decisive goal in a 4-2 triumph; the Flaming Dolphins singed the Emerald Strikers 3-0 as Marina Palmeri, Savannah Viejo and Carleen Cullen; the Super Shooters were just that in a 5-0 win over the Cheetahs and the Orange Crushers edged the Lightning Bolts 2-1.



For openers in the U12 boys tournament , the Silver Sharks snacked on the Tahoe Crushers 5-1. Nibbling on the net were Kyle Same, Derrick Holmgren, Jake Leonard, Scott Hoffman and Derrick Sheepack.

In other games, the White Lightning doubled up the Clash 6-3, H2O drowned the Jalapeno Peppers 7-1, the Tahoe Flame scorched the Black Raiders 2-1 and the Red Vipers stopped the Purple Predators 4-2.

Two goals by Chellah Wahl and one by Kyle Knoll gave the Chill Chicks a 3-1 victory against the Green Chilis and a fast start in the girls U12 playoffs. The Fuschia Flames burned the Purple Poison, making a 2-1 statement.

The U14 boys and girls started their playoffs this week.

The double-elimination tournaments continue daily, except Sunday, on elementary school fields, Kahle Park and Todd Fields.
