Babe Ruth All-Stars pound Truckee

Tahoe Daily Tribune Staff Reports

Staff report

The South Tahoe 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars started the postseason with a bang, walloping the Truckee All-Stars 22-0 at Reno West Park.

Twelve of the 13 South Tahoe players contributed hits, including four each by Kyle DiGrande and Max Simonian. DiGrande scored four runs out of the leadoff spot.

Joel Morris started the game on the mound for South Tahoe and threw three innings before Simonian came on to finish up the final two frames. While the pair didn’t record many strikeouts, their defense was solid behind them to preserve the shutout.

South Tahoe will face the Fernley All-Stars on Friday in the second round of the small-town, double-elimination tournament. The top two finishers will move on the state tournament, which South Tahoe can clinch with a win against Fernley. Sunday’s championship game is at 1 p.m.

With Thursday’s game going only five innings, South Tahoe coach Steve Weiss will have a full arsenal of pitchers to throw on the weekend. Pitchers are limited to seven innings in back-to-back games, so Morris can throw as many as four against Fernley.

“We’re pretty well set up right now,” Weiss said. “We could use Joel and Max again (Friday) and we still have some more pitching behind them.”
