Barna calls shutout as Lambuth claims win

Rain kept the Lambuth College and Union University baseball programs from playing twice this season.

The NAIA schools from Tennessee, which are separated by a mile, were scheduled to meet in the opening round of the regional playoffs Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala.

Once again, it was raining.

However, after a two-hour rain delay, South Tahoe High grad Chris Barna and his Lambuth Eagles pounded Union 15-0.

Jeremy Baker pitched a two-hitter and Charlie Hill hit a three-run homer as Lambuth earned another shot at Mid-South nemesis Cumberland today.

“Jeremy has been wanting to pitch against them for a long time. They’re kind of a rival for us,” Barna said.

Barna, a junior catcher, and Baker scouted Union last week during their Trans South Conference tournament and the homework paid off.

“We had a real good idea coming in, but we didn’t expect a two-hit shutout,” Barna said.

Hill swatted his three-run shot during an eight-run fifth inning that blew open a 2-0 game.

Barna was 1 for 3 at the plate with two walks.

“I hit the ball hard but right at people. That’s the way baseball goes sometimes,” Barna said.

Cumberland (49-12) and Lambuth (43-22) will each send their aces to the mound today. Cumberland has won five of the past six meetings, but Lambuth edged Cumberland 6-5 in last week’s conference tournament.
