Basher, Carter qualify for regional college meet

Like they have all season, Lake Tahoe Community College cross country runners Lindsay Basher and Grant Carter responded in a big meet.

Both Kokanee runners qualified for the Nov. 11 regional meet by placing in the top half of the field at the Golden Valley Conference meet last Saturday in Susanville, Calif.

Basher came in fifth (20 minutes, 54 seconds) in the women’s 3.1-mile race, which was won by Shasta’s Candice Joseph in 19:30. Carter, who helped lead South Tahoe High to a state title in 1999, finished sixth overall with his 4.1-mile effort of 23:16.

“They have been working hard and the results show,” said LTCC coach Terry Adams-Schmidt. “Three weeks ago I thought they’d be going to regionals and they’ve been hanging tough and improving every week.”

LTCC’s top male and female earned medals by virtue of placing within the top 7 runners.

Brian Smith of Shasta claimed first place for the men in 21:50.

Shasta captured both team titles.

Two other LTCC runners finished the men’s race as Mike Dela Rosa placed 16th in 25:48 and Frank Kuchenmeister came in 18th in 26:30. Dan Wolfers started but a nagging hamstring injury prevented him from going the distance.

Carter and Basher will compete at the regionals at 11 a.m. Saturday in Rocklin, Calif. The Kokanee runners must finish among the top 30 to advance to the state meet Nov. 18 in Fresno.
