Basketball tournament slated
Two youth 3-on-3 basketball teams from South Lake Tahoe finished third in the recent Hoop it Up of Sacramento Tournament.
A fifth-grade girls teams comprised of Norma Lizarraga, Sonia Ziayra, Nancy Lizarraga, Elizabeth Benetez finished third, winning two of four games in the outdoor event. The team was coached by Cary St. Clair.
“Our girls were outsized and pitted against girls a year or two older. They did extremely well,” St. Clair said.
An eighth-grade boys team made up of Nick Morales, Chad St. Clair, Armando Miranda and Alan Dacio also came in third. Jason St. Clair coached the bronze medalists.
The next tournament is set for May 31 and June 1 at Cameron Park.
The South Lake Tahoe American Youth Soccer Organization (Region 282) regular registration starts today.
Registration is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center. On Saturday, registration runs from 10 a.m. to noon at Kahle Community Park and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Recreation Center.
Registration fees are $45 for the first player, $40 for the second player in a family, $35 for the third player in a family and $25 for each additional player in a family.
Players must be at least 5 years old by Feb. 1, 1998, and may not have reached 19 years old by Aug. 1, 1997. Any child who didn’t play in Region 282 last year must bring a copy of their birth certificate in order to register.
Region 282 also needs volunteer coaches, referees, assistant referees, field mentenance workers and other helpers.

The South Tahoe Babe Ruth season opens Saturday.
An opening ceremony and barbecue starts the festivities at 5 p.m. Highlighting the opening ceremony is a season dedicaton to former South Tahoe Babe Ruth star Todd Fields. There will also be introductions of teams, sponsors, managers and coaches.
Following the ceremonies, the Marlins and Yankees will start the season with a 6 p.m. clash. All other teams begin play Sunday, starting at 8:30 a.m.
South Tahoe Junior Viking football early-bird sign-ups are scheduled at the Recreation Center today.
Sign-ups are from 6 to 8 p.m. today and during the same time span May 13, May 15, May 23, June 2 and June 4. The cost for the season is $150. For more information, phone Danielle at 544-4200.
