Bettors can’t get enough of Patriots

By Steve Yingling

Gamblers are told there are no sure things.

That was before the current NFL season. New England and Indianapolis are doing their best to provide bettors with easy money this fall.

The Patriots have yet to lose to the spread in eight games, while the Colts have slipped up just once in a road game at Tennessee back in September.

What will happen Sunday when the two unbeatens collide in Indianapolis.?

For one, Las Vegas established a betting line that is unflattering to the defending Super Bowl champion Colts. The Colts opened as a five-point underdog, and the line continued to move in the Patriots’ favor as the week wore on.

“What’s happening is everybody has fallen in love with the Patriots,” said Steve Schorr, race and sports book manager at Harveys Resort & Casino.

“Two weeks ago, we called the Las Vegas Consultants and talked about the game, and they were thinking the line was gonna be 1.5 or 2.5 for the Patriots.”

When the line opened on Monday with the Patriots as a five-point favorite, it wasn’t enough to deter gamblers from putting money on the Tom Brady-led team.

“Everybody is still playing the Patriots, even though the Colts are at home,” Schorr said.

“The Patriots have been so aggressive. At times it looks like they are running up the score. There could be a minute left and they have a nice lead, and they still go for a TD.”

There has been 10 times more action on the Colts-Patriots’ game than any other game scheduled for this week, Schorr said.

“Is it a Super Bowl? No. But it’s certainly a Super Bowl for the week of Nov. 3 for the whole state of Nevada,” Schorr said.
