Big hopes for radio auction

Jared Green

Support South Tahoe Athletic Teams has collected over 160 items for its biggest fund-raiser to date, Saturday’s radio auction on KOWL, and board members are confident the event will raise a large chunk of money.

The value of the auction items is estimated at $40,000, and the one person involved who has experience in radio auctions expects the bids to approach that total.

“I fully expect us to raise between $30,000 and $40,000,” said KOWL general manager Dennis Heinz, who has run such auctions at other radio stations. “Sure, people always want a bargein. But this is a different kind of auction and everything is tax deductible. People will probably be willing to overbid, so we could come out with a little more than what things are worth.”

The auction will begin at 9 a.m. and Heinz plans to keep it going until every single item has been sold.

“KOWL belongs to STAT until those things are all sold,” he said. “We’re going to do the absolute best we can to move everything.”

STAT board members made a big push last weekend to attract more donations and increased the list of items by at least 60. The most expensive donation is a plasma television from Accurate Audio Video valued at $5,000, while numerous restaurants and stores have donated $50 gift certificates. The list features items such as free teeth whitening, two pairs of $500 sunglasses and a wakeboard. One person even donated a used van with a blue book value of $4,000.

“I’m really impressed with the list we’ve managed to put together and there are even some other things that aren’t on the list yet for various reasons,” STAT president Mark Garratt said. “The people in this room have done an amazing job at getting out there and getting donations.”

Garratt said STAT will provide more than 20 volunteers for the auction. It will be the first big event for STAT and Garratt expects it to set the tone for future fund-raisers.

“This is our first and possibly the most crucial fund-raiser we’re going to have,” he said. “The success of this thing is very important to us and our future.”
