Big weekend for South Shore auto racers

Tahoe Daily Tribune Staff Reports

Tribune staff reports

South Lake Tahoe’s two auto racing participants at Champions Motor Speedway will display their race cars at Turn 3 on Saturday.

Gil Casper Jr.’s 1979 Camaro and Jason Flores’ 1987 Honda Civic will be parked outside Turn 3 from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday. For added flavor, a rib and wing cookoff starts at 4 p.m. Turn 3 is located at 2227 Lake Tahoe Boulevard.

If weather permits, Casper and Flores will make their season racing debuts on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Carson City. Admission is $9 for adults and $7 for senior citizens.

Casper has an added reason to do well on Sunday when he competes in the street stock division.

“Opening day happens to be dad’s 90th birthday,” he said.

Two blown engines have soiled Casper’s preseason preparations.

“I can’t believe it, but with two blown engines the third one has to be the charm,” he said.

Flores will compete in the hornet class and is determined to succeed in his first season.

“I’m definitely running for rookie of the year,” Flores said.
