Bloom returns with near-podium finish, Cabral sixth, Bahrke third

Defending moguls champ Jeremy Bloom, taking a short break from bowl preparations with his University of Colorado football teammates, returned impressively to World Cup skiing Thursday, finishing fourth in Ruka, Finland.

Bloom, a receiver and punter for the Buffaloes, finished just .02 away from the podium in an event under the lights.

South Lake Tahoe’s Travis Cabral, fourth in the World Cup standings, came in sixth.

Olympic medalists Shannon Bahrke of Tahoe City and Travis Mayer of Steamboat Springs, Colo., continued their solid skiing as each finished on the podium.

Bahrke finished third — her worst result in four events. The Olympic silver medalist has been second twice and first.

Defending World Cup champion Kari Traa of Norway won the women’s event with 27.25 points, with Bahrke not far behind in third at 26.66. Bahrke and Traa each have 292 World Cup points, but Bahrke retains the lead under a tiebreaker formula.

Tapio Luusua of Finland won his first World Cup with 27.33 points and Mayer collected his third straight podium with his second-place finish at 27.20. Canadian Pierre-Alexandre Rousseau was third at 26.87, Bloom fourth at 26.85 and Cabral sixth at 26.27.

Mayer and Finland’s Mikko Ronkainen each have 280 World Cup points, but Ronkainen holds a tiebreaker edge. Vail’s Toby Dawson, who skipped the event to compete in this weekend’s Ultimate Bumps & Jumps in Steamboat Springs, Colo., is third and Cabral fourth.
