Brieft — No decision for Romero in opener

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

Former South Tahoe High pitcher Jordan Romero didn’t log the innings he’s accustomed to in his season opener for the Sioux City Explorers on Saturday night.

Romero pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs in the Explorers’ 6-5 victory over Fargo-Moorhead in a Northern League baseball game in Sioux City, Iowa. He didn’t figure in the decision, but showed superb control, striking out two without walking a batter.

Last year, Romero led the independent Northern League with 140 2/3 innings pitched.

Romero, a 15th-round draft choice by the Baltimore Orioles out of South Lake Tahoe in 1997, is playing for his sixth minor league team in his sixth professional season.

Romero helped lead STHS to its last postseason appearance in 1994. That also was the last time the Vikings’ baseball program finished with at least a .500 record (10-10).

The 6-foot-1 right-hander won two games as the Explorers went 5-0 in the preseason.

A year ago, Romero posted a 6-9 record for Sioux City, compiling a 3.71 earned run average. Romero struck out 223 batters in his two previous seasons in the Northern League, leading the league in 2000 and finishing third last year.

— Hitt, Hickman named to Classic

South Tahoe High seniors Lindsay Hitt and Beth Hickman have been selected to play in the Optimist Nevada Basketball Classic June 1 in Fallon.

The Vikings will suit up for the West squad.
