Brown can’t wait to play with the legend

Matt O'Neill

What do you do if you’re the Oakland Raiders and lost to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game a year ago?

Why not just add the greatest receiver in the history of the NFL? That’s exactly what they did, signing Jerry Rice in the off-season.

Rice joins an already potent corps of pass catchers, which features both Tim Brown and Andre Rison.

This weekend, Brown is competing in the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship and offered his opinion on the NFL’s all-time touchdown reception leader crossing the Bay to Oakland.

“It should be great, getting a chance to play with the legend himself,” Brown said before his practice round Thursday. “The guy can still play the game and it should be an exciting year for us if we can all stay healthy.”

Brown and Rison were a dominating duo before Rice joined the team and now there might not be enough room or balls for all three of them.

“We’ll have to see what happens. It doesn’t look to good for (Rison) right now,” said Brown, who won the Heisman trophy in 1987 while he was at Notre Dame. “But if things can work out, they’ll find a way to get him back.”

With the rest of the team relatively intact from a year ago, Brown doesn’t know if Rice is the missing piece to put the Raiders into the Super Bowl.

“It’s hard to say at this point, but we’ll know at the end of the year whether or not he was,” he said. “We’ll definitely know in January.”
