Bruso earns first pro victory

Tribune staff report

Greg Bruso won his first game as a professional pitcher Wednesday, combining with two relievers on a six-hit shutout as the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes downed the Everett AquaSox 4-0 in Everett, Wash.

Bruso, a 1998 South Tahoe High School graduate who was a NCAA Division II second-team All-American at UC Davis last spring, tossed five scoreless innings. Bruso (1-1) allowed four hits, struck out six and walked one, departing with a 1-0 lead.

However, the Volcanoes scored once in the sixth and twice more in the seventh to seal the road sweep in Everett.

Bruso worked his way out of two early jams. Everett had runners on second and third with no outs in the first, but a popup sandwiched between a pair of strikeouts got him out of it. In the third, Everett put a runner on third with one out, but Bruso coaxed a popup and and an outfielder made a diving catch to get out of the jam.
