By guiding light, big one is nabbed

In the 35 years Don Sheetz his been fishing Lake Tahoe, he’s never had a “Big Mac” experience like he did June 19.

The part-time fishing guide helped first-time Tahoe fisherman Ryszard Piszczek of Wroclaw, Poland boat a 36-inch, 23-pound Mackinaw while jigging near Ski Run Boulevard. Bob Taylor of Zephyr Cove also was part of the fishing party that morning.

“It’s the biggest one I’ve ever caught,” said Sheetz, a 21-year fishing guide. “The last couple of years there’s been a lot more big fish caught. I think there are more of them out there than there used to be.”

Sheetz, a former Bijou and Tahoe Valley elementary school teacher, believes this is so because of the limit reduction from five to two fish years ago.
