Carson JVs whip Whittell

The Northern Nevada League 4A boys basketball teams aren’t treating Whittell High’s varsity too kindly.

Carson’s junior varsity whipped the Warriors 75-42 on Friday in Carson City. The Warriors also were beaten by South Tahoe’s JV 79-68 last Tuesday.

Whittell committed 34 turnovers.

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well and we didn’t take care of the ball well, and Carson did both of those things very well,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase.

Junior Joe Rodriguez, a transfer from Los Angeles, led the Warriors with 16 points. Whittell junior Dusty Apocotos chipped in 12 points.

Whittell 6-4 junior center James Putnam missed his second successive game with a severely sprained ankle. Maltase hopes to have Putnam back in two weeks.

Whittell, 1-9, opens its Nevada 3A Division II schedule on Tuesday against Dayton in Zephyr Cove.

“We need to step up our play for Tuesday,” said Maltase, whose club lost to Dayton in overtime earlier this season. “The kids need to find some proide and dig a little deeper for Tuesday night’s game, because we’re playing at home and it’s our first league.”
