Collins earns WAC swimmer of the week honors

Former South Tahoe High swimmer Kristi Collins, a Fresno State junior, has been named the Western Athletic Conference women’s swimming and diving athlete of the week for January 6-13.

Collins, the STHS record holder in the 50 free and 100 butterfly, established a new career high and team season best time in the 200 fly with a mark of 2:07.73 to help lead the Bulldogs to a 126-111 win over San Diego on Friday. She also posted Fresno State season-best times in the 200 individual medley (2:12.04) and with the 400 medley relay as the group’s third leg, touching the wall in 3:54.25 to win the event.

In the Bulldogs’ 158.5-141.5 victory over UC Irvine on Saturday, Collins won the 100 fly (59.78) and tied for first in the 200 fly (2:08.09). As the third leg of the 200 medley relay, she helped the Bulldogs set a new meet record and season-best time of 1:48.54.

This is the first career athlete of the week honor for Collins as well as the first for Fresno State this year.

Fresno State is 6-2-1 on the season, including a 5-1-1 mark on the road.

The Bulldog swim team returns to action Jan. 25 when it faces Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore., at 11 a.m.
