D’Angelo closes stellar sophomore season

Steve Yingling

Dan D’Angelo has two more years to top an impressive sophomore season of golf at South Tahoe High. Listening to him talk after finishing in a tie for 47th in the Nevada 4A state golf tournament Wednesday, one gets the feeling that D’Angelo promising junior and senior seasons lie ahead.

“My plans are to get better over the summer, make state the next two years and improve a whole lot,” said D’Angelo, who followed up an opening-round 80 with a 90 at Paiute’s Wolf Golf Course in Las Vegas.

D’Angelo struggled off the tee Wednesday, keeping him from his goal of finishing among the top 15 individuals.

“I definitely wasn’t hitting the ball as good as I was (Tuesday),” D’Angelo said.

D’Angelo missed a 3-foot par putt on the first hole and then was snake-bitten by lost balls off the tee on the next two holes. After starting 9 over after three holes, he played the remainder of the front nine in 1-under par.

But the momentum didn’t carry over onto the back nine as driving consistency raised his scores.

“It’s a real tight golf course, and he obviously was playing well to qualify for state, but you can’t miss the fairway,” said STHS Mike Patterson.

Galena’s Bryson Young finished runner-up to Matt Edwards of Coronado. Coronado trailed by two strokes going into the final hole, but he birdied while Young double-bogeyed.

The Grizzlies finished third in the team competition, with Bishop Gorman and Palo Verde placing 1-2.
