Dayton scores winning goal in final 2 minutes

Tribune staff report

Whittell High fought back from a two-goal deficit, but Dayton made the game winning shot with 90 seconds remaining for a 3-2 boys’ soccer victory Wednesday in Zephyr Cove.

Italo Ferreira, a senior transfer from Brazil, scored in the 60th and 71st minutes to pull Whittell even at 2 in its season opener. But Dayton averted a tie by scoring one more time.

“They didn’t give up and came back and tied it, that was nice,” said WHS coach Steve Maltase. “We just had a few breakdowns and it took us a while to get in sync.”

Whittell plays in the Del Camp Tournament this weekend.
