Douglas deals STHS first defeat

The South Tahoe High wrestling team battled hard at Douglas High Wednesday, but unfortunately came out on the losing end, 53-21.

Lack of strength in the middleweight divisions proved to be the difference in the match as the Vikings notched victories in the lightweight and heavyweight classes.

Wrestling at 112 pounds, Rusty Faulkner decisioned Douglas’ Austin Beemer, while 119-pounder Dan Dysters pinned his opponent 1 minute, 30 seconds into the match.

Kyler Crouse, wrestling at 125, pinned Tiger wrestler Matt Jaquinto at 3:45 in their match and heavyweight David Vasquez continued his solid year for the Vikings, pinning Joe Immers at 2:30.

“David had a really good match,” Viking coach Jack Lopez said. “Immers is a good wrestler and he’s about a foot and a half taller than David, so it was a well-deserved victory.”

The division loss was the first for the Vikings (2-1) this year. They will try and get back in the win column next Thursday at the two-day Reno Classic at Reno High.

Notes: The Vikings traveled to Susanville last weekend to compete in the Lassen tournament. Competing against nine teams, the Vikings went 3-6. Highlights came from Vasquez, who went 7-2, and Crouse, who finished 6-3.
