Douglas sweeps Viking tennis teams

After a crushing victory against Hug earlier this week, South Tahoe’s boys and girls’ tennis teams ran smack into Douglas, who was undefeated last year in the 4A Northern Region Sierra League.

The Tigers defeated the Viking boys at Douglas 16 1/2 – 6, and the girls at South Tahoe 13 – 9 1/2.

None of the boys’ singles players won a set, but Jason Schmedes, filling in the No 1. spot because Chris Filipko was injured, lost all three rounds by two games each, varsity coach Pat Fagen said.

The No. 1 doubles team of Mikey Ledesma and Garrett Moulton won rounds two and three of its matches 6-2, but lost to the No. 1 team 4-6.

The No. 2 doubles team of Clayton Cole and Jamie Moore went 1-3, so did the No. 3 team of Brian Stamme and Saraubh Desai.

The senior girls’ doubles team of Larissa LaRue and Kelly Haslam played well in the second round. Down 2-5, the duo came back and won 7-5. They went 2-3 for the day.

So did the No. 3 doubles team of Carla Jett-Pierce and Sarah Segal and singles player Samantha Crosson — who was the only singles player from South Tahoe to win a set.

Crystal Gibbons and Katie Killebrew went 1-3. They beat the No. 3 doubles team 6-1.

“I think now that they had such a close match, and know that they can beat a team like Douglas, it’s a matter of focusing on every match with a score like this,” said girls’ coach Sabrina Zalles.
