Forest Service worker has to quit half way through

The first attempt to complete the Tahoe Rim Trail in 30 hours failed as Chito Porath was unable to finish his trek after only 16 hours of running.

The U.S. Forest Service employee was forced to abandon his mission at the Eagle Falls Trailhead because of nausea caused by dehydration.

“I put my stashes too far apart,” Porath said. “I should have put them twenty miles part when they should have been ten.”

Porath ran 75 miles, or half to his goal of 152, before he had to call it quits. He said that other than being nauseous, he was in perfect condition to finish the trail within the 30 hours he set as a time limit.

“After about 25 miles I hit my pace and I was feeling pretty good,” Porath said. “I planned for the right amount of liquid, I estimated about one liter per 10 miles and I was right on that pace.”

Porath said he would give it a go again in the spring and he would plan it out better.

“I’d give myself more than just the week I did this time, I’m going to try it again in the beginning of the summer when the weather is better and the days are longer,” he said. “That way I’ll have more time to recruit help and plan it out.”

Although the early ending to his run was a disappointed, Porath said that he was glad he gave it a shot sooner, rather than later.

“I wouldn’t have had this lesson to learn from if I hadn’ t taken the chance,” he said.
