Fresh Tracks 5K becomes memorial race

The cause could bring out more snowshoers than usual for the Fresh Tracks 5K Race on Sunday at Historic Camp Richardson Resort.

The annual race presented by Tahoe Mountain Milers & Sagebrush Stompers running clubs has become The Eric Nageotte Memorial 5K Snowshoe Race & Familiarization Walk.

Nageotte and family, Ron Nageotte and Carol Rapacz, have been long-time, active members of the Tahoe Mountain Milers Running Club. Eric died last year in a skiing accident in New Zealand while training to make the U.S. Olympic Freestyle Ski Team.

Net proceeds from the event will be donated to the Heavenly Valley Freestyle Scholarship in Nageotte’s memory. The scholarship will help local, financially disadvantaged, young athletes fulfill their goals.

Racing starts at 10 a.m., with race-day registration running from 8:30 to 9:50 a.m. at Camp Richardson Resort Trading Company, which is located next to the Mountain Sports Center. A $30 entry feel will include a special race memento (a wicking balaclava for those cold winter days), postrace refreshments, entry into a postrace raffle and day use of groomed Camp Richardson trails.

There will be a limited number (approximately 30 pair) of Atlas snowshoes available to use during the race. Please call (530) 542-3424 or email to freshtracks5k@sbcglobal.net to reserve, as there is no guarantee that shoes will be available on race day.
