Freshman Bruso paces UC-Davis in win

Perhaps Greg Bruso’s friends and family in South Lake Tahoe should wait awhile before going to see the freshman pitch for UC-Davis.

The 1998 South Tahoe High grad tossed five innings of shutout ball as the Aggies pounded Stanislaus State University of Turlock, Calif., 14-3, in a non-conference baseball game Sunday in Davis.

With no one from his hometown knowing he’d be making a start on Sunday, the Aggies’ sole freshman player was relaxed in his collegiate debut.

“I had a lot of friends from my dorm watching, but if I had more people from Tahoe there, I would have been a little more nervous,” said Bruso, who struck out five and walked none. “I was a little nervous at first, but I played a lot of intrasquad games during the fall, so I felt at home. I felt good out there.”

He was only touched for three hits before giving way to the bullpen.

“I was mixing it up a lot. My best pitch right now is my changeup. I was hitting my spots, and the ones they did hit weren’t hit real hard,” Bruso said.
