Garcia to play in Reno-Tahoe Open

Tournament Director Jim Kline announced Monday that Sergio Garcia has committed to play in the Reno-Tahoe Open.

Garcia, nicknamed “El Nino,” notified the PGA TOUR on Monday of his intentions to play in the event August 21-27 tournament at Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno.

“Other than Tiger Woods, Sergio is currently the biggest draw on tour,” Kline said. “Sergio will be a huge draw and should contend for our championship. He has a nationally televised one-on-one showdown with Tiger the day after our tournament, so you know he will be focused in on playing well.”

The 20-year-old Spanish sensation finished second to Tiger at the 1999 PGA Championship and had two International victories in 1999, at Murphy’s Irish Open and Linde German Masters.

The Reno-Tahoe Open will be broadcast on CNBC. In its second year, the tournament is one of only two PGA Tour events in Northern Nevada, Northern California and the Pacific Northwest and features a field of 156 PGA Tour professionals competing for $3 million purse.

In 1999, Notah Begay III earned his first PGA Tour title by three strokes over Chris Perry and David Toms.
