Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic tees off Sunday

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Twenty-six athletes and celebrities will tee off on the North Shore beginning Sunday to pay tribute to former Oakland Raider Gene Upshaw while raising funds for cancer programs and traumatic brain injury research. The seventh-annual Gene Upshaw Memorial Golf Classic will be held July 12-13 at Schaffer’s Mill Golf Club.

The two-day tournament features NFL Hall of Famers Marcus Allen, Marshall Faulk, Mike Haynes, and soon-to-be named Hall of Famer Tim Brown. The diamond will be represented by MLB star and Cy Young winner Vida Blue.

Downhill ski racer Daron Rahlves and former professional snowboarder Kevin Pearce, co-founder of Love Your Brain Campaign, along with entertainment celebrities like Kevin Sorbo of “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” will also be swinging away in the celebrity tournament. In its seventh year, it is the signature fundraiser for the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund at the Tahoe Forest Health System Foundation.

The fund benefits the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center and the Tahoe Institute for Rural Health Research. Since the inaugural classic in 2009, the event has raised more than $825,000 for pancreatic cancer research, quality medical treatment and care for cancer patients and their families, sustainability and advancement of medical technology, and funding for research in areas such as mild traumatic brain injury.
