Girls lose to Carson, but pack their bags for zone

The Vikings were tied with Carson after two rounds of play Thursday with runner-up in the 4A Northern Region Sierra Division on the line.

Lacey Leonard and Samantha Crosson both lost 6-2, but Elyse Jones defeated Carson’s No. 3 singles seed 6-2.

South Tahoe needed to win only two of three doubles matches to win, but Carson’s No. 1 team defeated Sarah Segal and Carla Jett-Pierce 7-5 and its No. 2 team defeated Katie Killebrew and Crystal Gibbons 6-4.

“It could have gone either way,” said Vikings coach Pat Fagen. “The girls played well. They played close matches and won a few and lost a few.”

The 13 to 9 1/2 loss leaves the Vikings at 6-3 in league and in fourth place, the last spot to qualify for zone as a team.

South Tahoe plays at Galena next Tuesday. Galena is undefeated in the High Desert League.

The boys loses at home to Carson 14 to 8 1/2.

The boys finished tied for fifth in league at 4-5 and didn’t qualify for zone.

As such the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association allows teams through fifth place in league to send two singles players and two doubles teams on the individual zone tournament.

“All our guys are really close, so the next two weeks we’re just going to be having challenge matches … to see who is going to go,” Fagen said.

Fagen said the team lacked depth and is young, but that they played about as well as they can play all year.
