Vikings break another record, STHS finishes fourth in 12-team event

For the second straight conference tournament, the South Tahoe High golf team rewrote the record books.

The Vikings finished a school-best fourth in the 12-team Northern Nevada 4A League tournament Monday at Wildcreek Golf Course in Reno.

“I’m definitely pleased the way we’ve started out,” said coach Mike Patterson, whose Vikings finished fifth while shooting a school record 405 in the previous event. “If we keep playing like this, we could finish high enough at zone to make state. It’s not out of the realm of possibilities. We were only 14 shots out of first today.”

McQueen won with a 406 total and was followed by Galena (413), Reed (417), South Tahoe (420), Reno (424), Carson (438), Douglas (440), Sparks (444), Elko (451), Fallon (457), Wooster (498) and Hug (459).

Sean Fannan of the Vikings finished runner-up to medalist Bryson Young of Galena. Fannan’s 75 was only two strokes behind Young, who won the first tournament as well.

“He’s really playing well. His putting is the most improved part of his game,” Patterson said.

Fannan had to putt well on Monday because the greens were “rock hard and lightning fast,” according to Patterson. “It’s not a super difficult golf course but all the kids, not just our kids, had trouble with the greens,” he said.

Also figuring in the Vikings’ record-setting day were Ryan Kraw, 84; Patrick Curtis, 85; Kenny Craig, 87; and Dan D’Angelo, 90. South Tahoe didn’t use Hunter Harris’ 92.

The Vikings resume conference play Monday at Sunridge Golf Course in Carson City.

Whittell finishes third

Two scores in the 70s and not one in the 90s spelled out a very successful golf tournament for Whittell High last Friday at Mason Valley Golf Course in Yerington.

“They played well,” said Whittell coach Steve Maltase. “There was nine new holes (at Mason Valley) so that was a little rought, but it was a great day for golf.”

Keith Truswell fired a 3-over-par 75 and Ryan Salomon shot a 79 to lead the Warriors to a third-place finish in a 13-team 3A-2A tournament.

“We’re going to have to pick it up a little to get second or first,” Truswell said. “We have to step it up if we want some trophies.”

Manogue won with a five-player team score of 385. Lowry was second with 397 and Whittell fourth with a season-best 409.

Truswell won last year’s event at Mason Valley but one club prevented him from repeating his title.

“My flat stick wasn’t rolling them in,” said Truswell, who won last year’s event with a career-best 72. “I had tons of birdie chances. I only missed five greens and one fairway.”

The scores were also solid behind Truswell and Salomon. Patrick Flanagan led three players in the 80s with an 81. Parker Fox shot 85 and Cary White 89.

Whittell plays Thursday at Rosewood Lakes in Reno.
