American Century Championship officials may extend the contract established between the so-named investment firm, NBC Sports, Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and Harrah’s Lake Tahoe.

An announcement is expected to be made Friday morning about the relationship that has taken the premier South Shore event into its 18th year.

NBC Sports holds an agreement with American Century to stage the golf tournament through 2008. It’s contract with LTVA and the casino runs through 2010.

The tournament, which starts this week and ends Sunday at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, features some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment, including actor Kevin Costner playing for the first time in the LTVA Celeb/Am Tournament today, and Tour de France cycling great Lance Armstrong expected to appear on Thursday.

Basketball stars Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley will join soccer sensation Brandi Chastain and Seinfeld actor John O’Hurley.

Television coverage is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday on ESPN2 and NBC. More than 6 million viewers are expected to tune in.
