Grizzlies place 4th at state tourney

Brown, Amsden, Vogelgesang play roles for Tahoe team

Staff reports

South Shore’s Evan Brown, Elliott Amsden and Scott Vogelgesang went up against the best teams in California last weekend and had little trouble proving they belonged. The three local hockey players helped lead the Tahoe Grizzlies bantam (13- and 14-year-olds) to fourth place at the California state tournament in Escondido.

Channel Island of Southern California won the tournament with a 3-2 victory over Tri Valley.

Tahoe qualified for the four-team state playoffs by placing second in the Northern California regional playoffs earlier this month. Brown and Vogelgesang both scored in the team’s three games on Friday and Saturday, while Amsden established himself as one of the state’s top defenders. All three players will move up to the midget level next season.

“They are the first team from this area to make the state tournament,” said Grizzlies’ coach Gary Gramprie. “All three local kids played really well, and this is an experience they will never forget.”
