Harris wins elite slalom race

The deeper it gets into the ski season, the smoother it is becoming for the area’s first-year J1 competitors.

Marty Harris of South Lake Tahoe and Bryce Wehan of Kirkwood collected podium finishes on Sunday in a Western Region elite FIS slalom race at Snow King Resort, Wyo.

Harris of Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation came back from third place after the first run to win the slalom with a combined time of 1 minute, 38.43 seconds. Wehan of Kirkwood Ski Education Foundation moved up from fifth to third on his second run and clocked in at 1:40.35.

The 17-year-olds didn’t fare as well in Monday’s slalom. Both didn’t finish their second runs. Harris was in third place entering the final run.

But it was a good day for Kirkwood’s Shane Collins.

Collins, who didn’t complete his first run Sunday, bounced back for a fourth-place finish on Monday.

Meanwhile, Marty Harris’ older brother, Cory, recently finished fifth in GS in a NCAA FIS level one race in Crested Butte, Colo.
