Heavenly begins snowmaking
Heavenly Mountain Resort began its snowmaking operations on Wednesday night, an indication the 2006-07 season is just around the corner.
Heavenly has the West Coast’s largest snowmaking system and can cover 70 percent of its trails, a reality that has the South Shore resort confident it will open to skiing and riding on its scheduled opening day of Nov. 17.
Snow storms earlier this month left about a foot of snow on upper elevations, but Heavenly has concentrated its snowmaking efforts on Big Dipper and Orion runs on the Nevada side. For more information, visit http://www.skiheavenly.com.
Plake signs new deals
South Lake Tahoe native and freestyle skier Glen Plake has signed two endorsement deals in the past two weeks, the first with Dalbello and then a multi-year contract with Elan on Oct. 15.
Before switching to Elan, Plake skied for K2. Plake’s wife, Kimberly, will also join Elan working in the women’s program as a member of its design and development team.
“I love tinkering around in ski factories, and it’s really exciting for me to be able to work at Elan’s factory with such a young, open-minded and talented group of engineers,” Plake said in a press release. “Elan skis are world-class performers and the quality is unbelievable.”
