Heavenly offers freeride ski team

Heavenly Ski Education Foundation, the ski racing program at Heavenly Ski Resort, will offer a freeride team in addition to its freestyle ski team this winter.

The freeride team will compete in slopestyle, skiercross and big air events when possible. It may also compete in halfpipe.

The freestyle team, which has been under the direction of Jere Crawford for the past eight years, competes in moguls, dual moguls and aerials. On occasion, skiers would also compete in halfpipe and big air.

Crawford said so many skiers started lining up in the terrain park and halfpipe that Heavenly decided it was time to organize a program to provide skiers with a solid direction.

That, said Crawford, is the way the sport’s going. So HSEF’s going with it.

Chris Eckert, 26, will coach Heavenly’s freeride team. He coached a similar program at Alpine Meadows last year.

The program is open to anyone, but Crawford said skiers have to be fairly advanced. Practice begins Dec. 1.
