Heavyweight leads Viking wrestlers at Reed

If victories in the heavier weight classes were worth more, South Tahoe High would rank high in Nevada polls with recent performances by David Vasquez.

Vasquez, a senior wrestling in the 275-pound class, went 5 for 6 in the Reed Invitational to finish third overall as an individual in the 19-team tournament Friday in Sparks.

“He could have taken second easy, but he was on the same side as the champion in the semis,” said South Tahoe wrestling coach Jack Lopez.

Vasquez led eight Viking wrestlers in the invitational. Nick Naccarato (125) took sixth place before getting pinned by Sullivan from Reed. Josh Reeder (140) also took sixth place before losing to Dickson from Yerington.

Dan Duysters (125) and Cooper Merhaut (130) both won two matches and Oscar Moreno (189) won one.

The Vikings’ next match is Saturday at Lincoln High School.
