Hennessy hits three homers

For openers, it was Mike Hennessy day. For closers, it also was Hennessy’s day.

The South Tahoe High sophomore belted three homers – a solo homer shy of a rare home run cycle – as the Vikings pounded out six roundtrippers and a wild 19-14 junior baseball win over Douglas on Tuesday in South Lake Tahoe.

In South Tahoe’s delayed home opener, Hennessy started his powerful day at the plate with a grand slam and finished with three- and two-run bombs in the sixth inning.

“They were legit, too. They would have been out of most ballparks,” said Viking first-year JV coach Matt Tillson.

South Tahoe trailed Douglas 14-10 entering the sixth, but Hennessy’s two-run shot made the score 14-12. Hennessy’s three-run homer concluded the scoring.

“We just got too many hits to get the solo homer,” joked Hennessy, whose homers hit the school twice and a third landed on a car in the South Tahoe Middle School parking lot. “I started going to the batting cages quite often and coming out here and working on the field. My bat has started to come around the last five or six games.”

Overshadowed in Hennessy’s unforgettable performance was Cory Poulen’s pair of two-run homers. Matt Connelly also homered to go along with his double and single. Carlos Romero added two hits for the surging Vikings, who have won four of their past five games to improve to 5-10.

“The one thing they have that a lot of teams don’t have is great attitudes. There are no hotheads on this team,” Tillson said.
