Honors go to Haase

Michael Traum

Postseason awards are beginning to roll in for Kansas senior guard Jerod Haase.

The South Tahoe grad has been chosen to the All-Big 12 third team and is on the ballot for the All-American Academic Team.

South Tahoe coach Tom Orlich said the addition of the Texas schools, which changed the Big 8 to the Big 12, made this year’s selections more difficult.

“I’m not sure if I agree with the choice, but I’m biased,” Orlich joked. “But when you look at the guards involved, they’re all going to be NBA prospects. And it’s the age-old thing, they look at points first. Jerod does so many quiet things on the court, you have to be a student of the game to truly appreciate it.”

Haase’s off-the-court abilities were recognized as well, being selected to the district all-academic squad. He has a cumulative grade point average of 3.70 with a perfect 4.0 this year. The honor puts him into the running for national recognition. He was a second-team Academic All-American last year.

“In this day and age, to be one of the top guards in the country and an exceptional student/athlete is quite an achievement,” Orlich said.

The Jayhawks begin Big 12 tournament play on Friday.
