Jam session goes well at Whittell High

Staff report

The inaugural Tahoe Classic Basketball Jamboree went off without a hitch last weekend as eight teams faced off at Whittell High.

With most teams mixing and matching players from varsity, junior varsity and middle school teams the play was uneven but constructive. Whittell head coach Nathan Tolbert, one of the tournament organizers, brought four returning varsity players along with several incoming freshman and watched them develop teamwork.

“These were just glorified scrimmages. It was all about seeing how people worked together,” Tolbert said. “We haven’t practiced together, we only had a shell of an offense put in. But we ran and scored, which is what I really wanted to see.”

Whittell played a game against Northern 2A rival Hawthorne High and won handily. Rising junior Katrina Kacirek, who will be a key member of the school’s volleyball team this fall, was the mainstay of the Whittell offense.

Alameda High’s team traveled the farthest for the event and played well, while South Tahoe High made the short drive to Zephyr Cove and impressed Tolbert despite having one of the youngest teams.

“I thought South Tahoe would really struggle, but they hung with the other teams,” he said. “It would be great to have two local teams do well this season.”
