JVs, frosh struggle vs. North Valleys

It was tough going for South Tahoe High’s freshman and JV squads at North Valleys on friday. The freshmen lost 53-16 and JVs were defeated 61-16.

The STHS freshman team was led by Cassie Moore with eight points. With injuries and players leaving the team, the freshman squad is now down to 10 players – seven of whom played in the game.

North Valleys played a zone defense throughout.

“We couldn’t take advantage of it,” said STHS coach Simon Ruvalcaba. “Anytime a team is in a zone defense you are going to get opportunities from the perimeter, and we had plenty of looks but couldn’t sink the shots.”

STHS slipped to 0-5 in division play and 0-5 overall.

“I think success comes from what you do or don’t do in the offseason and there wasn’t much of an offseason this summer with the coaching change,” Ruvalcaba said. “At least an off season program will now be available this summer.”

Coach Eric Aquino was unhappy with JV team’s efforts for three quarters. The Vikings only managed five points heading into the final period before they opened up a bit on offense.

Jessica Hallard finished with seven points. Both teams now head to Douglas on friday and host Carson on Saturday.
