Kacirek slowed but Whittell still beats Quincy

The Quincy girls’ basketball team thought it had an idea how to beat the Whittell Warriors – stop Katrina Kacirek. The senior forward scored 35 points against in a win over Quincy earlier this season but was limited to just 15 on Tuesday night.

“It kind of worked because Katrina didn’t score as many as she did the last time we played them,” said WHS coach Nathan Tolbert. “But we’re just a much more balanced team now.”

Jessica Woods scored 13 points and had eight rebounds, while Kendra Koskin contributed 10 points and nine rebounds as the Warriors beat Quincy 61-53 in a nonleague game in Zephyr Cove.

Megan Esquivel added eight points and six rebounds for the Warriors (11-1). Whittell trailed 16-14 after the first quarter but outscored Quincy by nine points in the second to go up 38-31 at halftime.

“It seems like we’re just starting to hit our stride as the important part of the season is coming up,” Tolbert said. “We think we’re pretty good. We’ll find out on Friday.”

Whittell travels to Battle Mountain on Friday to play the Longhorns in the Northern 2A opener for both teams. Battle Mountain is the defending league champion.

Before that game, though, the Warriors get another test when they play a nonleague game against 4A Douglas on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Zephyr Cove.
