Kidd welcoming change

When Phoenix Suns’ point guard Jason Kidd learned he had been swapped out to New Jersey for Stephon Marbury, he was both surprised and disappointed.

“You’re never guaranteed , one, to be able to play this game the day after you play a game,” Kidd told the Associated Press on June 29. “The other side is, you’re never guaranteed to to be on that team forever, so you just got take it with a grain of salt and show your talents every time you have that opportunity to play.”

Just over a week later at the American Heritage Celebrity Golf Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, the former California Golden Bear has begun to embrace his new team.

“I’ve talked to everybody (with the Nets), I’m excited, they’re excited, and I can’t wait,” Kidd said.

Kidd, an icon in the Phoenix area, had his star tarnished just a bit when he was charged with domestic abuse after a confrontation with his wife.

There has been speculation that the incident precepitated his departure from the Southwest.

“I knew I was going to be traded, so that was the good part,” the 1994-95 NBA co-rookie of the year said.

While Kidd may have seen a change coming, it caught some of his Suns’ teammates by surprise.

Phoenix shooting guar Vinny Del Negro was anxious to catch up with his former teammate to discuss the move.

“They had talked about it a little during the year, but I still think it was a surprise,” said Del Negro, an 11-year pro. “His basketball skills go without question and I’m looking forward to catching up with him this weekend.”
