Kirkwood putting on an extreme test

For the sixth year the most dangerous area at Kirkwood Ski Resort will be open this weekend.

The Cirque, normally closed to the public, will be opened for the Corona/RSN North American Freeskiing and Riding Championships, which begins Thursday and continues through Saturday.

“It’s one of the best areas in North America to ski,” said Mike Delaet, Kirkwood’s Promotions Manager. “It’s great to have the most desired ski area opened up for this event.”

The North American Freeskiing event at Kirkwood is one of four throughout the West. Other stops include Snowbird, Utah; Whistler, British Columbia; Mammoth Lakes; and Crested Butte, Colo.

Although many athletes will not be known until registration takes place today, many world renowned extreme skiers will take part, including New Zealand’s Geoff Smalls.

The winner of this weekend’s event will automatically qualify for the World Extreme Championships in Alaska later this year.

Thursday’s competition will be held at Lookout Vista, while the rest of the competition will unfold at The Cirque.

“The first day is going to be at an inbound location so everyone gets a chance to ride,” Delaet said.

The event it sponsored by Corona, Resort Sports Network and the Tahoe Tribune.

Registration is open to all skiers and begins at 8 a.m. today at Zach’s Bar.
